DOCK 20 x Perrrformat x Druckwerk Lustenau x S-MAK are seeking a temporary/established/interdisciplinary/classical/experimental artist duo in the field of performance/choreography for a one-month residency in Lustenau. The aim of the residency is to develop a site-specific performance in public space with a performance in Lustenau (premiere) and in Zurich in September 2024. We are looking for two artists who want to place their practice in relation to local conditions in tension with global contexts and issues. Who expose themselves to the vagaries of the outside world, leave the comfort of a protected space and develop new perspectives on suburban, public space. Who relate their work to the spatial environment, to society, to their Wahlverwandtschaften ( engl. elective affinities).
Inclusion, exclusion, order, riot – the public sphere not only describes the interplay of certain institutions, facilities and collective routines. It also draws a constantly changing psychogram of a society, reflects its horizon of expectations and forms the battleground for hegemonic narratives. Public performance art has always been part of the tradition of making these visible and putting them up for discussion: From the 1970s onwards, Pope L. (may he rest in power) crawled through the streets of New York, marking the normativity of public space with his submissiveness that outraged his fellow Black citizens. In the 1980s, VALIE EXPORT's Körperkonfigurationen (engl. body configurations) nestled against the representative architectures and topographies of power in Vienna, while the American Mierle Lederman Ukeles shook the hands of thousands of garbage collectors to make the invisible infrastructures of urban society visible. In 2014, Pedro Lemebel rolls off the burning stairs of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Santiago, Chile. "Desnudo bajando una escalera nº2" ("Nude, descending a Staircase No. 2") is a performative, queer intervention in the canon of the world's art history from the perspective of the Global South.
How can performance art be shown beyond institutional and exhibition contexts? How can these interventions shape public space? What does exchange with the public mean? The form of collaboration is entirely up to the participants, the only requirement is that they work on the same piece. They will be provided with a shared apartment in Lustenau or the surrounding area for the duration of the residency. Adequate knowledge of German is required for work in rural areas. Applications can also be submitted in English. An approx. 50 square meter room in the Druckwerk Lustenau is available as a work and rehearsal space, the technical equipment can be adapted. Participants will be selected by a jury consisting of representatives of all participants
